Three Free Ways to Protect Your Sports Car.

By: Thomas Hunter

No one can resist the magnetic pull of a beautiful sports car, it seems. Thieves are no exception. Sports cars have long been a common target for thieves. Fortunately there are steps drivers can take to decrease the likelihood of sports car theft.

Although there are many products one can purchase, including custom alarm systems, there are some small free things a driver can do that will cut the risk of sports car theft significantly. Three of the free ways to protect your sports car are:

Hide Your Valuables

Many times, a car robber is attracted by what they can see in the car. If you have anything of interest or value sitting in plain view, it should be removed or hidden prior to leaving the car alone. Don’t forget, a car thief may be enticed by something you personally don’t consider crime-worthy. Items as simple as CDs can attract unwanted attention and encourage break-ins.

By reducing the temptation level in and around your car, you can successfully turn thieves away. Most auto thefts and break-ins are crimes of opportunity, not well-planned capers. Simply removing one of the motivations to steal can have a tremendous effect.

Park Wisely

Choose parking spots that are not car thief friendly. These would include highly visible areas and monitored parking facilities. Thieves thrive on privacy and invisibility. By placing your vehicles in highly trafficked areas, you remove one of their greatest assets—the ability to work unseen. Few car thieves will be willing to approach and rob a vehicle that is parked in an area clearly visible to the public.

There is safety in numbers. Keep your sports car in a crowd and car thieves will probably look elsewhere.

Manage Your Keys

Keep track of your keys, and don’t leave them in the car. This tip seems remarkably easy, but failure to abide by it is a common feature of many car thefts. Drivers believe they can leave their car running on a cold day as they quickly duck in and out of a convenience store. Drivers neglect to pull their keys from the ignition while on eating a restaurant lunch. A suburban sports car owner feels so safe in his neighborhood that he leaves his keys in the car out on the driveway. Each of those stories ends the same way: A car is stolen.

One must resist the urge to leave their car keys in the ignition and must develop the habit of taking the keys with them every single time they exit the car. As noted, car break-ins and thefts are, in large measure, crimes of opportunity. There is no more tempting opportunity than a beautiful sports are with a set of keys dangling from the ignition! Remove the temptation, and you are much more likely to avoid the thieves.

There are any number of great anti-theft and car alarm systems that might be worthy investments for your sports car. There are also relatively inexpensive theft deterrent devices like “The Club” that some people have found very effective deterrents to theft.

However, there are free actions a sports car driver can take to better protect his investment from unsavory characters. By remembering these three tips, one can greatly reduce the risk of being victimized.
