How to Know if You Need to Download that Security Patch.

By: Thomas Hunter

Sometimes computers get boo boo’s that need a band-aid to help prevent infection. And what exactly am I talking about? I’m talking about viruses and worms, the worst sickness your computer can get. And those band-aids are the security patches that will help prevent those nasty viruses and worms. So, how do you know if you need to download a security patch?

There is always a threat waiting to invade and shut down your computer. It could be a little virus that can do minor damage to your PC or it could be a lethal worm. In 2001, there was a worm dubbed Code Red that invaded a multitude of computers and almost closed the White House website. Worms can give hackers unauthorized access to computers to go in and do what they like. Viruses and worms can only attack those unprotected computers where there’s no security patch. Computer users who do not take the time to download a security patch or for those who fail to update their software run the risk of becoming infected with a malevolent virus or worm that will spread like small pox though your computer and any other systems connected with it.

Computer security attacks have cost the entire globe over $36 billion dollars between the years of 1999 and 2004. Security attacks are a widespread problem that keeps those in the security software industry constantly busy, tracking them down, developing a patch and getting the right information out to customers so they can fix the problem before anymore harm can be done. The best way to avoid these vicious and costly attacks is for software vendors to spend the extra time and money it takes to produce a more reliable and easy to install program. These new security programs are also made readily available to computer users all over the world.

Worms, viruses and a number of other security threats can be extremely harmful to all computers and the other machines they are hooked up to by destroying data, inducing operational glitches, and by making personal and financial information readily available for anyone who seeks it. Unfortunately, there are hackers out there that have nothing better to do or even make their living by hacking into unsecured computers to steal your information. As a matter of fact, hackers make their living by writing codes to seek out software vulnerable computers. All the user has to do is open an email and BOOM! You’re infected.

Most software vendors will catch the vulnerable spots in their programs before the hackers do and that is when they develop a special security program called a “patch.” These patches are given free of charge to all users. Catching these vulnerable spots it a constant battle for these soft ware vendors because hackers just keep looking for a way to get in.

Even the best security software programs can have some vulnerability to them. This is why security patches are made, to fix the problems as they are caught. It’s important that you open any emails immediately that come from the security software vendor you are using. You can never really have too much security for your computer. Not like you have to download five security systems into your computer, but it’s always best to play it safe and keep your programs updated and run a computer check up on a regular basis.

In 2001 when Microsoft found a hole in its Internet Information System, they immediately made a security patch available to fix the problem. Even though Microsoft acted quickly with making the security patch, most people installed the patch right away and those who did not, was slammed with the Code Red worm less than a month later. This is why it’s very important to act quickly when a security patch becomes available. The small amount of time it takes to download the security patch is nothing like the time and money you will loose when your computer is infested with a worm or virus.

By the time you get done reading this article, a new patch code will be posted about another vulnerability that has been found and considered critical by one of your security software vendors. From the very moment the new vulnerability is discovered, security software vendors will be frantically at work to develop a new effective security patch for which their customers hurry to obtain and apply.
