Three Reasons to Wipe Your Computer’s Internet History Files Clean.

By: Thomas Hunter

Not only are our lives now completely reliant on computers, it seems like there is a seemingly endless flow of chores that we either should or have to do with the computers. Even your Internet browser is a victim of this. It is a good idea to wipe your Internet history files clean with a fair amount of regularity. It is not difficult to do, but can be very useful in keeping your system running, protecting your computer privacy and protecting your Internet privacy as well.

Programs like windows actually record history of the things you do on your computer. The Internet sites are stored so that the files can be used later on. In addition, your computer may record other actions you take as well. The reason is so that you computer can recall information faster by remembering where you have been before. The problem is that it puts a strain on your system’s memory, and puts both your home privacy and Internet privacy at risk.

To delete the history files, first close windows and Internet explorer. You may not realize it, but windows explorer uses the Internet as well as Internet explorer. Go to your control panel, click on Internet options and then the general tab. Click on the “delete files” button. You will be prompted and should check off the “delete all offline content” box and the click okay. That will delete the history files on your computer as well as other temporary and junk files.

The first reason to do this is to keep your computer running fast and smooth. You see, as you surf the Internet or perform actions on your computer, it actually records much of what you do. It does so to make sure that it is as fast and efficient as possible when you return to the same files or the same websites over and over again. Even when you are on a website, it will continually download files and images. The history as well as these files will all take up space on your computer. As you well know, the more space that is taken up on the memory of your computer, the slower your PC will become. By deleting your history often you will keep your computer running much faster and much smoother. With the speeds of Internet connections today, there is really no need for the history to speed up anything at all.

There is another reason to delete the history as well. It is about keeping your Internet privacy. When the history is in tact on your computer, where you have been on the Internet and what you have done there is much more accessible. It is accessible to hackers, to your family, and to anyone else who might be getting on and using that computer. Looking at the history files does not take that much computer savvy and there may be information there you just don’t want everyone to have. Credit card numbers, embarrassing website destinations, and even passwords can end up being a part of the history on your computer. Delete the files and any other connected files (like the cookies and cache) to keep your Internet life and destinations private from anyone who might want to take that information from you.

A third reason is similar to the Internet privacy, but it is simply the privacy of your local PC. Online, the privacy is primarily to keep track of information that hackers might exploit for actions like identity theft and general electronic theft. On the other hand, your history at home may make files you recently opened more accessible to computer savvy children or co-workers. By deleting the history, at least you keeping anyone who is too nosey from knowing what files you have looked for been working with.

You know it is important to keep your computer running efficiently. You also value your privacy. There are things that you can do to ensure both of those things. One of the most important things you can do with your computer to both protect your privacy and keep your computer running smoothly is to regularly erase your history files. The history files keep track of what you have done on your computer and where you have been, and they also just take up valuable memory space.
