By: Thomas Hunter

Technological advancement has allowed people from different locations to interact and meet “face to face” in real time. This is made possible through video conferencing, which allows video and audio interaction among people from different locations.

Video conferencing is already used by top business establishments. However, the technology is not only limited to companies with millions in assets. Today, even a common housewife can participate in her very own video conferencing with her children, her business contacts or just about anybody from different parts of the world.

Those who have tried video conferencing swear that it is indeed more cost effective, as you can save on travel time and travel expenses. Imagine what it would cost you, monetarily and time-wise, if you have to take an eight hour plane ride just so you can show your clients a simple product presentation.

Video conferencing has become a significant communication tool, considering the various issues related to finances, time and safety. With this technology, you are not only able to see or hear the other party, but you will also be able to make product presentation through slides and Power Point Program.

If you want to save on travel costs and the hassles of going from one location to another, or if you want conduct your meetings (private or business related), then you have to set up your own video conferencing station. What you need is a computer with a suitable Internet connection, a camera and a microphone. Most individuals who already have a computer have a hard time choosing the right camera for video conferencing.

A camera, once connected to a computer with an internet connection, can be used to take your picture and transfer them to the web, or it can be used for video chats or for showing your face on the net while instant messaging. A more important use of the camera is for remote monitoring which can be used for your home and even for the office.

The choice of a camera for video conferencing depends on the availability of the equipment in your location, the budget you have and the type of conference which you are going to conduct.

Before buying your camera, you must choose between a webcam and a digital video camera. A webcam, which is already being commonly used by people who chat via the Internet, is much cheaper, depending on the quality you prefer.

The ideal resolution of a web camera is at least 640 x 640, which will enable you to get clearer images. A web camera is easily connected to a computer, with the use of a USB cable. The USB or the Universal Serial Bus, allows faster transfer of data. The latest USB 2.0 is even faster, but understandingly more expensive..

An ordinary web camera will do if you will conduct one on one conferencing but a web camera with a wide angle lens would be better for group video conferencing as it allows a larger group of people to be seen in the monitor.

You can also opt for a digital video camera, the same one used for recording home videos, which is more expensive. However, you need not buy a new video camera if you already have one at home or in the office. Just make sure that your digital video camera has a video output and a top loading mechanism for video tapes. It must also have a port and USB switching device which can be connected to a computer with a high speed internet connection.

Now that you have decided on the type of camera you will use, you also have to consider the camera features that you want and the price. Also inquire about after sales services and warranties, to make sure you won’t have a problem once you start conducting video conferencing.

Once your camera has been set up, make sure that it has been properly adjusted in such a way that you appear in the center of the screen. You do not want a close up image of your face to appear on the screen so always leave some head room.

Lighting is a very important aspect in getting good images from your camera. Make sure you place the light in front rather than behind you to avoid putting you in shadow. It will also help to do a mock up before the actual video conference so you don’t fidget with the camera while the conference is going on.

Now that you know the basic equipment for video conferencing, you are on your way to experiencing one of modern technology’s greatest achievements in communication.
