Examining the wonders of video conferencing.

By: Thomas Hunter

Video Conferencing is the ability of parties around the world to communicate visually and verbally using a two-way electronic system to conceptualize, design, deliver quality and administrator reliability for a productive corporate experience.

The technology surrounding video conferencing integrates both audio and video data and converting the concentrated signals into a real time interactive technology. This telecommunication system of audio and video transmission is also called video teleconference, which was first seen on the early years of 1968.

The history on the wonders of Video Conferencing can be traced back to the roots of early analog communication period. After the birth of television, there was an attempt to draw a communication using the image and audio transmitting box by converting it into a two closed circuit television with cable communication. It was National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) who first foster the first video conferencing technology during their space flight by using the UHF radio frequency then linking it to satellite to establish communication to far-away locations. However, such integrated and advance communication is relatively expensive by nature, thus can’t be used for meetings conducted by the general public whether for business or personal uses. The ineffectivity of the technology to other industries can also be traced by the poor receptions of audio and video systems. The lack of efficient compression techniques can be traced by dreadful Video captures which produces dreadful picture quality and audio. It was only in 1980’s that this technologically advanced communication became possible through the birth of ISDN. ISDN paved way for the minimum bandwidth of 128 kilobits per seconds, which compresses audio and video transmissions. Using ISDN, images where digitally replicate allowing a 2 way TV with real time audio and video vision. With the birth of ISDN, dedicated systems of video conferencing started to expand.

On its expansion on 1990, the relatively expensive technology, which revolves in exceedingly costly equipment, software and network requirements has been transformed into a standardized technology, which is accessible by the public at a practical cost. IP source video conferencing started which allowed a more reliable video compression technology allowing PC and desktop video conferencing. Also, video conferencing software liked MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger existed thus catering for an affordable and notwithstanding technology.

The main technology used in a video conferencing was digital compression of audio and video streams in real time system. Video conferencing works with a use of video camera that generates video signals. The so called video features numerous number of individual picture frames which were made up of two fields. These fields were separated during video transmission and then joined on the latter part of the reception period. Moreover the procedure involves maximizing network cost and reception quality. Thus, audio and video must be compressed through video code or coder decoder system. With the video code procedure, video and audio motion are more fluid and well receive by the other framed side party which then passed to a communication networks like ISDN. The audio features of video conferencing operates a way where all communicating parties can speak and see each other at the same time.

The wonders surrounding the technology of Video conferencing can be classified into two types first is the point to point and the second is multipoint. Relatively, Point to point is the simplest video conferencing method which only involves two IP addresses that of the two users, generally to establish and directly connect for the point of their conversation. Generally, point to point is used by home users or single transmission communication as largely communication depends on two personal computers or PC’s. On the other hand, multipoint video conferencing uses a multipoint bridge, which caters to connect three or more users using a server or a single central hub device using a room system for a large conference settings.

Relatively before, the innovative technology of Videoconferencing can only be taken advantage by large companies who have the buying power to invest in this new genre of communication. As years and technology progresses, there has been a spectacular decrease not just in the price of the equipment but more on the procedure taken by users. It is remarkably without doubt that many organizations resorts on video conferencing as a way of communicating with their business partners world-wide or by executing their corporate functions such as sales presentations, trainings, resourceful estimation or hiring consultations. Notwithstanding, the cost of video captures and display technology, businesses and generally the public use personal videoconference systems based on web cameras, software compressions and free software particularly chat. Moreover, regardless of the type of Video conference used, most system allow the exhibit of papers using electronic document camera, playing a pre-recorded video or exhibiting presentation using different Microsoft software.

Lastly, aside from video being shared and transmitted, Video conferencing allows sharing of PC applications, which initiates a remarkably meeting environment beyond physical distance.
