Reasons why Alternative Care Coverage is on the Rise in Health Insurance

For millions of Americans who suffer from an array of illnesses and disorders, alternative therapies represent nothing short of a miracle for them. What was once considered quackery or fraud is now being viewed as normal. With growing evidence that treatments work and at the fraction of the cost and side effects of synthetic drugs many people are turning more to alternative medicine. The number of Americans who swear by alternative care has skyrocketed in the past decade. An increasing number of state laws have also begun to make head way in insurance coverage for certain types of alternative treatments, such as massage, chiropractic and acupuncture. Two-thirds of all healthcare providers offer some kind of compensation for alternative and naturopathic treatments today. Many people like the idea of being able to not have to take so many pills to maintain a good health.

For the longest time insurance companies would not approve any type of alternative therapy due to lack of evidence it actually worked. Many people had to pay out of pocket for such treatments and many actually cancelled their medical plans since it would not allow for such treatments. There is little question that increasing competition in the healthcare insurance industry has forced many insurers to rethink their position on alternative medicine. As widespread use of alternative therapies, including chiropractic, massage and acupuncture, healthcare providers had little choice but to recognize their customers' newfound priorities or risk losing buyers. In a study, more than a third of HMOs surveyed said members were the primary catalysts behind alternative benefit offerings. Legal requirements were also a strong compelling factor. Now that studies have shown that alternative medical practices actually do help people, lawsuits can be drawn up on the large insurance companies that dare say that it isn’t a form of medicine and should not be included as such.

For many people who traditional medicine did not work or the medications given to them made them worse with side effects, solace has been found at last. Many individuals have a preventative alternative game plan that helps the mind body and soul. This can include massage for tension release and improving circulation, Polarity or Rieki therapy for over all detoxify and cleansing of the energy systems of the body and spirit, and acupuncture for stimulating trigger points that take care of such common things as an upset stomach, headache, and even infertility. Many herbalists and homeopathic practitioners can also help prescribe herbal remedies that don’t have the side effects of synthetic drugs but are just as effective. Making these types of alternative medicines available can open up a whole new market and give people the choice to see what type of practitioner works best for them. The insurance companies could have a whole new type of insurance plan on their hands. Many individuals would prefer to be able to see a different type of practitioner for different types of health issues. It has been proven that people who get massage, acupuncture, and other forms of alternative therapies are sick less and fewer systemic issues than people who use synthetic drugs alone.

For the large health corporations a new market can be at their feet. There is a lot of profit to be had in this market for everyone. The insurance companies will now have a new client base and insurance market. The practitioners can have more clients because they will be able to accept insurance form their consumers. So that means that small private businesses will grow more, jobs for the economy, and more money for everyone. Most people who like alternative medicine would by a plan that had a monthly premium so they could get the services they needed with out the extra cost. It will be a good idea all the way around for everyone to add this type of medicine to the list of important health topics. This kind of medical life style should be incorporated into the wide world market of insurance, new business growth, consumers and buyers. Medical and pharmaceutical industries as well as other types of markets have unlimited growth options and a potential money market for the masses on their hands if they would just take it. When the public cries out for something that will improve the economy and health of the consumers, it should just be done.
